A sudden intake of breath and the eyes snapped open.
A creaky window, moss laden walls and stench of unknowing.
What, How, Where and Why,
All questions unanswered.
The darkened room,
Forever a cage.
A millennia ago, she remembers,
The kindness that burnt.
The stillness that cheered.
Oh how she was foolish,
Whispered the unlit creatures,
That linger in anguish.
A wrinkly hand carves on the wall,
A tally of the days, hours and minutes.
She recalls how she hummed,
And how she cried for freedom.
She pictures herself as a bird.
One who soars the sky,
And squeaks loud.
A crash startles her awake,
Another bloodcurdling beast.
Broken, beaten and trapped.
Just like her.
She has learnt to whisper now,
To not murmur or laugh loud.
Eons go by,
All things feared,
Crawl on the darkness.
She understands now.
The cage will forevermore remain locked.
