Clichéd Endings

A calm and cool look was placed upon the red-headed girl as she looked over the horizon. It always fascinated her, how the sun was a flaming ball of fire that slowly and gradually sunk down in the depths of the vast sea.  But it also reminded her of many memories. The ones that existed and the ones that could have been.  A monstrous heart, a conniving mind and glistening ambition. That is how Mae was.  The typical ginger, feisty but with a certain softness and face lined with freckles. Rayena wanted a happy ending. A place overlooking the sea, a normal family and someone she loved unconditionally. But she knew she was far from normal. First red flag was when she stole a goldfish. A goldfish for her partner in crime. In a literal sense, Rayena and Mae were partners in crime. They stole, mugged and buried the skeletons deep in the closet.  She remembered a time where the sting of betrayal didn’t linger.

An already beaten up cop ran behind the two. Sounds of their drunken giggles filled the winter night.  “Go, Go, GO!” screamed Mae as she dove headfirst into the car through the open window.  Rayena who took the more mature approach slammed the door shut and scrambled to start the old vehicle. Everything fell apart as soon as it came together.

Sirens blaring in the distance and the wild beating of their hearts were the only sound they heard. A very tired and weak voice caught Mae’s attention. She glanced over her shoulder, not turning fully. Knowing if she did, the steal walls would crumble.  Her once vibrant blue eyes showed no emotion. It was as if a switch was flipped. The light of freedom was on her face and she couldn’t wait for the end of the tunnel. Clichéd endings, one where the other partner sold out the another. Betrayed by the ones they trusted the most.  But sometimes clichés are comforting.

Rayena tiredly watched as Mae fled the scene. Her doe-eyes filled with tears, and fear.  A blinding light made her snap them shut.  As she slowly blinked, her surroundings changed. All she could see was a bridge. Just a normal bridge and darkness. Not knowing what lies on the other side, she stayed there. After a heartbeat came a voice. A voice she recognized well.  It’s bittersweet to think about the damage her heart felt. Yet she walked forward. Knowing that her tranquillity would come only when they were together.
